Only in the 20th century did political ideology displace God (the French gave it a go in 1791, but it didn't take.)

This is confirmation of Nietzsche's view that we had already removed God from our hearts and minds. The "God is dead" line is incorrectly interpreted by many as, "woo hoo, we got rid of that God guy so let's go party!" He was really saying the opposite: "how do we know how to live without God whom we have killed?"

All of the rationalist, totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century are answers to Nietzsche's question. And all have failed, repeatedly, often disastrously, because they seek a moral order designed by sinful man. This continues (in fact is accelerating) even today.
