‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ Turns 72

On July 29, 1954, The Fellowship of the Ring was published in the U.K. For the first time, outside of Inkling gatherings at pubs and in Oxford offices, people would have the chance to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic.
More than seven decades later, it’s hard to imagine a world in which The Lord of the Rings isn’t an iconic part of the cultural landscape. Even in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, characters quote from the film adaptation of Tolkien’s first novel in the literary trilogy.
While the books were commercially successful, Fellowship did not garner immediate public praise. Critics were dismissive. A leading writer in the U.S. called it “juvenile trash.”
But as the One Ring had been forged in the fires of Mount Doom, Tolkien’s mythology had been forged on the battlefields of World War I and defending through pipe smoke at The Eagle and Child.
He worked on the book for decades, C.S. Lewis encouraged him for years, and the world is still benefiting from Tolkien’s imagination and craft.
