More Middle-earth on the Way
Door Jam: December 9, 2024
The Door Jam is a place to squeeze in relevant articles written about C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, their work, adaptations of their fantasy worlds, news from other franchises, and interesting articles. Unless otherwise stated, I’m not necessarily endorsing (or criticizing) any of these but merely sharing them with you.
The top story this week is the on-screen future of Middle-earth. More movies, including a new trilogy, could be on the way, and Rings of Power seems to be all but confirmed for season three and beyond.
Top Story
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim arrives in theaters this week, and you can watch an eight-minute clip from the film now.
Whether that gets you excited for Middle-earth anime or not, creators with the rights to the Tolkien legendarium all seem to be moving forward with more adaptations.
Philippa Boyens, screenwriter and co-producer with Peter Jackson on the cinematic trilogy, said they are looking to develop more after The War of the Rohirrim and the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum movie. She told The Playlist:
“So we’re in the audiences hands. If there’s an appetite for it, we’ve got more stories. There’s a ton of stories left to be told there and some really, really interesting ones. But my preference would be, after ‘Hunt For Gollum,’ would be to look at those stand-alone stories. And then if we got really ambitious—there are some epic, particular stories that could translate into that more traditional epic trilogy format that was the original ‘Lord Of The Rings,’ the war of the rings story.”
In the more immediate future, they want Viggo Mortensen to return as Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum.
In recent interviews about The Rings of Power, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed that they are still operating under the original plan for five seasons and that they’ve already begun work on season three, despite no official confirmation announcement from Amazon.

A book by or about C.S. Lewis
Despite his popularity, Lewis was primarily a private person. One of the few reflections on life inside his home, beyond his own pen, is from Douglas Gresham’s Lenten Lands: My Childhood with Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis. Unfortunately, recent news indicates that Douglas will not be around much longer. He has worked diligently to support his stepfather’s legacy. Pray for him and his family.
