Narnia Arrives on Netflix … Kinda
Door Jam: January 12, 2025
The Door Jam is a place to squeeze in articles about C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, their work, adaptations of their fantasy worlds, news from other franchises, and interesting articles. Unless otherwise stated, I’m not endorsing (or criticizing) any of these but merely sharing them with you.
Netflix has said nothing official about Narnia for more than six years. Now, over the past few days, we’ve gotten a press statement on the project and even a placeholder for the movie on the streamer.
The last time Netflix made an official announcement regarding Narnia was in 2019, until now.
Obviously, a lot has changed since 2019, including Netflix’s plans for Narnia. Six years ago, the streamer announced, “Matthew Aldrich has come on board to oversee the development and creative live-action adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series.”
But on January 7, 2026, Netflix released an update that confirms Greta Gerwig as the screenwriter and director, but with little new information:
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Will Roar to Life on Netflix and IMAX in 2026
Get ready to be immersed in the Barbie director’s vision of C.S. Lewis’s enchanted world.
Netflix is preparing to transport audiences to Narnia, the enchanted realm created by author C.S. Lewis, with a feature film unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard before.
Written and directed by Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women), the highly anticipated adaptation will debut this year in IMAX theaters in November, ahead of its release on Netflix in December.
Gerwig, whose films have found fresh, original ways into beloved stories, brings her singular vision to Lewis’s iconic world explored in The Chronicles of Narnia series. Filled with mythic battles and unforgettable creatures and characters, the seven-book collection launched in 1950 and has sold more than 115 million copies and been translated into 57 languages worldwide.
While details of the forthcoming film remain locked behind enchanted doors, it’ll be an adventure that invites in both longtime fans and new magic-seekers.
Produced by Gerwig, Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, and Vincent Sieber-Smith, with executive producers Douglas Gresham and Melvin Adams for the C.S. Lewis Estate alongside Patty Whitcher, the film will be the first chapter in Netflix’s cinematic journey through Narnia.
Check back on Tudum for more epic revelations from the land of Narnia.
We do have confirmation that the C.S. Lewis Estate is involved. With Gresham’s recent health concerns, however, he is not likely to be very hands-on.
There’s intentionally not much here. We do have more hints at a music-forward project with the phrase: “a feature film unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard before.”
Of course, we don’t even have confirmation that the story being adapted is The Magician’s Nephew. Or do we?
Alongside this announcement, Netflix also uploaded a Narnia placeholder on its service.1 In English-speaking nations, the title is simply “Narnia.” But NarniaWeb heard from international fans in Italy, Brazil, Poland, and other nations that their title card includes a translation of The Magician’s Nephew.
We can hope more information, both official and unofficial, will be coming soon.
