Gerwig Goes Back to Narnia for Reshoots (or Not)

In six months, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be in IMAX theaters. Before that happens, though, Greta Gerwig has returned to filming the movie. But the reasons for that return are up for debate.
Veteran Hollywood reporter Jeff Sneider reported that two Netflix theatrical releases are undergoing additional filming: David Fincher’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, The Curious Case of Cliff Booth, and Gerwig’s Narnia.1
Drawing from Sneider’s reporting, World of Reel said Netflix asked for reshoots of Narnia because of disappointing test screenings. This was said to be a directive from Netflix brass who felt the film needed more work.
In contrast, NarniaWeb reported this is “additional photography happening, not reshoots,” according to a “source close to the production.” They believe this shooting does not involve the principal cast and should last no more than two weeks.
This could simply be part of the normal filmmaking process and reflect Gerwig’s and Netflix’s commitment to “get it right.” Or it could signal a lack of confidence in Gerwig’s vision and a disappointing movie. Or somewhere in between.
If the details behind this production are ever fully revealed, they would make their own fascinating story.
