Ignore the clickbait headline about a “secret meeting.” A new document discovery indicates that Tolkien and Lewis talked about Middle-earth earlier than expected, which is still interesting.
The new evidence unearthed in the Michaelmas Club archive now signifies that speaking openly about his hobby for the first time in 1930 and receiving praise for it was a real turning point in Tolkien’s career. By the winter of that year, he had started writing The Hobbit and reading it aloud to his children.
Prof Horobin said: “Lewis encouraged Tolkien’s language creation at an earlier stage than previously known. This is important because the invented languages were fundamental to the creation of Middle Earth. As Tolkien said: ‘The invention of languages is the foundation. The “stories” were made rather to provide a world for the languages than the reverse’.”
